Katherine is a veteran journalist who has spent more than 20 years covering news and sharing stories on radio, TV, print and on the web.

A Beautiful Tribute To A Special Girl

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Monday, September 14, 2015, In : Cleveland

Last year, these beautiful photos kept popping up on my social media.
Families, couples, even solo shots of friends, standing in this breath-taking field of bright, sunny, happy sunflowers.
"Where is that?" I wondered.
After a bit of research I came across the answer.
It was part of a remembrance for a little girl.
A little girl named Maria who died of cancer.
Maria was just 7-years-old when a brain tumor robbed her of the long life every child deserves.
But out of her passing, hope bloomed, in the...

Is It Hot In Here, Or Is It Just Me?

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Friday, February 13, 2015, In : Cleveland

They say a picture's worth a thousand words. What does this picture say?
It says the #1 killer of women is heart disease. And we need to end that.
So, today, I was honored to MC the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women Health Expo at the Cleveland Convention Center.
Heart disease isn't fun. But raising money to fight it should be.
And that's why these handsome Cleveland firefighters were invited to the party... to keep the ladies entertained.
And provide a little eye candy.
Did my heart go...

Coming To A Theatre Near You...

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Tuesday, February 3, 2015, In : Cleveland

Checked another item off my bucket list!
For two months now I've had to keep this under wraps.
But, finally, I can share the news.
I got to act in a Hollywood movie!
Can't give much detail because we had to sign confidentiality agreements.
But, let's just day, if there was one movie that I'd love to be a part of, it was this one.
A friend reached out in December saying a Hollywood production company was in Cleveland and needed actors. And needed them tomorrow! Was I interested?
"Duh!" I replied.
Tha...

"Finish Line Feeling" Book Review

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Friday, September 19, 2014, In : Cleveland

Raped. Angry. Pegged as a lost cause.
Liz Ferro should have been a sad statistic. Instead, she escaped hell. And in this book Liz explains how you can too.

“No my friend, darkness is not everywhere, for here and there I find faces illuminated from within; paper lanterns among the dark trees.” --Carole Borges

I pulled this quote from “Finish Line Feeling,” Liz Ferro’s book.

It’s a powerful truth that makes me weep every time.

Liz went through hell.

Her childh...

Remembering A Terrible Day

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Thursday, September 11, 2014, In : Cleveland

13 years ago, I was sitting in a rocking chair nursing my newborn son, while watching the Today Show.

Matt Lauer came on air, and calmly said, "We're hearing that a plane hit the World Trade Center...."

Life changed in an instant.

I sat in that chair and watched the horror happen.

"A second plane hit! A second plane hit!"

When Jim Miklaszewski broke in with the news that an "explosion" had just rocked the Pentagon, I called my husband at work and told him to come home, "Now!"

Som...

A Study In Black & White

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Thursday, August 21, 2014, In : Cleveland

My great-great-grandmother was able to come to the United States thanks to fashion.

She was a dress maker. And through her craft, she cobbled together enough money to bring herself and three young daughters to Boston after her husband died.

Even though they were poor and lived in Roxbury, the girls always looked stunning.

What they wore, the dresses they made with their own hands, was an advertisement for their business.

I never knew why I cared so much about each outfit I put on. Or why my moth...

Getting Fit With CrossFit

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Thursday, March 13, 2014, In : Cleveland

During my time at Q104 I gained 10 pounds. Yuck.

I blame the hours. Up at 3 a.m. Back to bed at 7:30 p.m. That coupled with a ton of needless stress left me in a constant state of exhaustion. And the weight just piled on.

So when I recently spied the new CrossFit studio while driving down Detroit Road in Rocky River, I decided it was time to get my spreading arse in gear.

Immediately went home and signed-up online for the class that very night. I'm into my second week now and couldn't be happier...

What an incredible night.

More than 400 people turned out last night for the first-ever All About The Bag Fashion Show Benefit for the Hunger Network of Greater Cleveland.
The event was sold out and raised more than $61,000!
"Every $1 raised provides 4 meals in one of our hunger centers... that means Wednesday night, we raised enough for 240,780 meals for hungry neighbors right here in Cleveland," said Angela Dudek, Director of Special Events for The Hunger Network.

It was so fun walking the c...

Walking The Catwalk For Charity

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Sunday, February 23, 2014, In : Cleveland

I love fashion. And I love helping charities. So when the Hunger Network of Greater Cleveland asked me to be in its first "All About the Bag" celebrity fashion show benefit I was thrilled.

Had my fitting this week at Cache in Beachwood Place. Tried on practically every gown. It was so fun!

Pictured above are two of my favs, though I ended up going with a funky fuscia cocktail dress. You'll have to go to the show to see what it looks like. :)

Hope you can join us for the fashion show. It's from 6...

Yes It's True. I'm Leaving Q104

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Wednesday, January 29, 2014, In : Cleveland

Yes, it’s true. I’ve decided not to renew my contract at Q104.

The reason is simple. I miss journalism and want to return to my reporting roots.

Before joining Q104 as morning show co-host, I spent 20 years reporting on news in Cleveland and around the country.

While I love writing and presenting the news on Q104, I miss being out on the scene witnessing what’s really going on with my own eyes and ears and senses.

A few times really hit me hard over the past couple years when I've been "stu...

Workin' It In New York City

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Monday, September 9, 2013, In : Cleveland

It was New York Fashion Week. It was U.S. Open week. And it was the premiere of the new Bethenny TV talk show. All happening in the Big Apple.

Wow!

My trip to New York City was a girl's dream come true. WKYC-TV asked me to do a story on the five Cleveland women hand-picked by Bethenny Frankel to attend the premiere episode of her new day time talk show Bethenny.

I flew to New York with WKYC-TV videographer Steve Pullen and we were put up in the swanky W Hotel on Times Square. We then followed t...

Tiffany's Comes To Cleveland

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Monday, September 2, 2013, In : Cleveland

There's just something about that little robin's egg blue box. It makes a girl's heart warm just a bit more.

Tiffany and Co. has been a family favorite for years. Each birthday or Christmas my mother would order me something from the Tiffany catalog. It would always arrive in that famous blue box tied with soft white silky ribbon. And just looking at the packaging was almost as exquisite as opening the box to find out what treasure lay inside.

I've been to the Tiffany & Co. stores in Chicago, N...

Elle Magazine Parties in Cleveland!

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Sunday, May 19, 2013, In : Cleveland

Elle Magazine came to Cleveland to throw a party!

And what a soiree’ it was.

Hundreds of stylish Cleveland hotties donned their prettiest spring frocks and sashayed into Charles Scott Salon in Rocky River

They were treated to free updos, manis and swag bags. Oh, and yummy, yummy hors d’oeuvres and sweet treats.

Elle Magazine’s Marissa Frobes told me the mag chose just a handful of exclusive salons from across the country to throw these fun parties, and Charles Scott made the cut because it...

Cleveland Connection In The News

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Saturday, February 16, 2013, In : Cleveland

Newschannel 5 interviewed me this week about Cleveland Connection.

Watch the video.

Since taking over the public affairs show in January, I've been working hard to freshen it up. My philosophy is, just because it's a Sunday morning public affairs broadcast, that doesn't mean it has to be stale and boring.

Cleveland Connection should be a celebration of all the great work, great people, and great events that are making Cleveland a better place.

The focus is on issues including the local econom...

Talkin' Super Bowl On WKYC-TV

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Tuesday, February 5, 2013, In : Cleveland

I am soooo not a sports fan. But I love major events. And few come bigger than the Super Bowl.

Even though it's built around a football game, what draws me into the Super Bowl is the glitz and glamour and musical performances.

Oh, and the commercials!

So when WKYC-TV asked me to be on Live on Lakeside to kibitz about Super Bowl commercials, honey, I was in!

You can watch our gabfest here.

Filling-in on Q104

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Monday, December 5, 2011, In : Cleveland

Gosh, it's been a really exciting month.  At the tail-end of October, I started filling-in on the Q104-FM morning show. It's called Toohey and Fee, and I was asked to fill-in while co-host Jen Toohey is on maternity leave.

For someone who writes for fun and a living, I'm ashamed to say I can't put into words how fantastic the past few weeks have been.  I feel so alive and am having so much fun.

I can't believe I'm actually getting paid to do everything I love: report the news, revel in celebr...

Santa Claus is coming to town

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Sunday, November 20, 2011, In : Cleveland

Santa Claus is in the house.  Or, more accurately, the mall.

The big guy famous for sporting a crushed red velvet suit arrived in style last night at Crocker Park.  I was covering it as a story for cleveland.com but I was also there because I wanted to share the special moment with my kids.

Few feelings in life ever top the thrill of Christmas when you're a little kid.   From the giddy rush you get when Santa arrives, to the scary anticipation of sitting on his lap, to the sweet torture tha...

Christmas Ale First Pour

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Friday, November 11, 2011, In : Cleveland

Haven't written for a while but I have a good excuse.  Blame it on the Christmas Ale.

It all started the afternoon of October 25, 2011.  That's when hubby and I won the very first pour of Christmas Ale at Great Lakes Brewery.  They don't call it Christmas crack for nothing.

Anyhoo, since that wonderful day, I haven't been quite the same.  But it's been swell. Really swell.

The Dead Ride

Yes, I'll admit it.  I'm one of those adults who still likes to get dressed up for Halloween.  And today hubby and I got to dress up a little early for the annual Dead Ride.

The Dead Ride is a group bicycle ride through Tremont, Ohio City and downtown Cleveland. Oh, and you have to dress up as a zombie.

It's a ton of fun. Not only do you get to hang with friends, get some exercise and enjoy some of the best neighborhoods in Cleveland, you also get to dress up.

Brains!!!

Making Pumpkin Pie

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Sunday, October 16, 2011, In : Cleveland

Some things just go hand and hand with a season.  Like making pumpkin pie in the fall.

Today we got up early and mixed all the ingredients: pumpkin, eggs, evaporated milk, sugar, spices.
We baked it for a little over an hour.  And then set it out to cool for another two.

The house smells heavenly.  Smells like pumpkin pie.  Smells like fall.

October 6: Occupy Cleveland

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Friday, October 14, 2011, In : Cleveland

Walked into work this morning to find about two dozen people gathered in Public Square.  I wandered over to see what was going on.

Turns out it was Occupy Cleveland.

This small gathering in front of Moses Cleaveland is an off-shoot of a much larger movement sweeping across the U.S. It started about three weeks ago on Wall Street in New York City.  People, especially the young, protesting the greed of banks and large corporations and the lack of jobs for many U.S. citizens.

Not sure yet if the ...
