October 14: Soulful Sunset

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Saturday, October 15, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

Be still and know that I am.

Whether you believe in a God or not, sometimes there are things in life that stir something in your soul.  This was one of those times.

The sun was setting over Lake Erie tonight and I couldn't help but feel the power in it.

It was just gorgeous.  A contrast of lights and darks, fury and calm, anger and peace.  It felt electric and alive. So alive.

October 13: A Change is Coming

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Saturday, October 15, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

Headed down to the shore of Lake Erie today. Haven't been there since the dog days of August.

It looks very different now.  Gone are the bright green and blue hues, the tiny rhythmic waves, the diamonds of sunlight.

Now it's dark and choppy and brooding.

The lake seems to know too that the change of seasons is coming.

October 12: Indian Summer

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Friday, October 14, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

This is Indian Summer in Cleveland.  We've had a stretch of absolutely divine days.  Brilliant blue skies, temps in the upper 70s, and cool evenings perfect for sleeping.

No question this is my favorite time of year in Cleveland. There's an extra spring in my step, a true appreciation for the beauty that surrounds me, and a tinge of melancholy knowing what's to come.

Stupid winter.

October 7: Chalk One Up for Fall

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Friday, October 14, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

Broke out the box of winter clothes today.  Had to schlep down to the basement, sort through a half dozen heavy boxes,  until I unearthed the big plastic tub stuffed with long pants, long sleeve shirts and light jackets.

Good news though.  I found a box of chalk packed in with the fall clothes.  Not sure why it was there, but then again, it doesn't surprise me. Mom brain.

October 5: Throwback

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Thursday, October 6, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

Had to drop off some shoeboxes to my daughter at school today.  Of course she forgot to bring them this morning and needed them "NOW!"

On the way out of the office, I couldn't help but smile.  In front of the school was a sea of bicycles.

It makes me happy for so many reasons.  I love that I live in a community where it's safe enough kids can ride their bikes to school.  I love that I live in a community that has sidewalks on every street.  And I love that I live in a community that harkens b...

October 4: Here Comes the Rain Again

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Thursday, October 6, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

It was another soggy walk into work this morning.  Even though I was clad head to toe in rain gear, and clung to my umbrella with all my might, by the time I arrived at work I looked like a drowned rat.  Again.

At least all this rain and gray skies makes for pretty photos.

October 2: End of the Season

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Sunday, October 2, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

Checked on my community garden plot today for the first time in a week.  It's just so sad.

This was a disastrous summer for our community garden.  It rained so much and so often that many of the plots on the north-side were submerged under water.

Luckily my plot is on the south-side and didn't flood.  But it was still a struggle to grow vegetables this year.

I harvested only one zucchini, two bell peppers and three cucumbers all season. The tomatoes did O.K. and the basil, chives and marigol...

October 1: Greens and Ham Hocks

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Saturday, October 1, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

It's a cold, rainy, blustery day.  Perfect for comfort food.

Few things give me as much comfort as collard greens and ham hocks. I'd never even heard of the stuff until I took a job at a TV station down in southern West Virginia.

I was a vegetarian back then, and trying to find meatless meals in the mom and pop restaurants in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia was a mighty difficult task.

I learned the only vegetarian dishes on the menu were beans and cornbread, grilled cheese sandwich...

September 30: Apple of My Eye

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Saturday, October 1, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

With fall comes apples.  And these are my favorite kind. MacIntosh apples grown right here in Northeast Ohio.

They're fragile, bruise easily and turn mushy.  You have to buy them at just the right time and eat them practically on your way home.

Because they're tart and tangy, they make the best apple cider, another treat popping-up on store shelves this week.

And another sign that fall is really here.

September 25: Great Danes Dawning

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Tuesday, September 27, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

Spent part of Sunday writing a story about these big fellas, Tilly and Madigan.  Both are Great Danes who were adopted from a rescue shelter.

I love writing my stories for cleveland.com.  I get out in the community and meet people who inspire simply through their passions.

The man in the orange jacket is Doug Hull.  He adopted Tilly and Madigan from the shelter, and it's now his passion to spread the word about it.

He volunteers one Saturday a month at a local pet shop.  He stands outside wit...

September 24: Give Me the Goods

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Saturday, September 24, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

Not exactly sure what gelato is.  I do know for sure that I love it.

In our town we have a fabulosso little gelato shop. The shop itself can't be more than 10 feet wide by 10 feet long.  But every inch of it is crammed full with sinfully delicious gelato and the customers trying to consume it.

My personal favorite is the dark chocolate.  In this photo it's in the upper right corner.  And you can see it's pretty much gone.  After I took this photo, it was all gone. :)

September 23: Painting the Town

The fall festivals are in full bloom.

Clevelanders know there are precious few weeks left where we can comfortably enjoy the outdoors.

So it seems every community around is holding a family fall festival complete with face painting, games and goodies.  I'll show you some of those goodies tomorrow.

September 22: Cleaveland

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Saturday, September 24, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

This is Moses Cleaveland.  The guy Cleveland is named after.  And yes, he spelled his name with an "a."

There are many rumors as to why the city is spelled Cleveland not Cleaveland.  The most popular one I've heard is that the big newspaper back in the day dropped the "a" so Cleveland would fit on its front page.  Don't know if that's true, but that's the urban legend.

Anyway, I snapped this photo of Moses today because I think even he is tired of all the rain we've had this year. Especially be...

September 21: Midges

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Thursday, September 22, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

They're back.  And they're everywhere.

Those pesky but harmless little midges are once again littering my door step. They're drawn to the light at night, live their scant 24-hour lives, and then leave their bodies in a heap for me to sweep up in the morning.

I think I only caught one in my mouth and two in my eye as I whisked them into the dust pan this morning.   Great way to start the day.

September 20: Shiny Orb on the Square

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Wednesday, September 21, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

Cleveland's weather has been very London-like lately.

For days now, we've had an on-and-off fine misty rain. It's horrible on the hair, but makes otherwise dank looking objects shiny and pretty.

This giant granite orb sculpture on Public Square is a perfect illustration of what I mean. Didn't really notice this before, until this week, when its smooth, reflective wet surface caught me eye.

Even on rainy, gray days in Cleveland, nooks of beauty can be found.

September 19: My New Bike

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Monday, September 19, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

It was love at first sight.
I heard about all the madness that was surrounding the launch last Tuesday of Missoni for Target.  The Italian fashion house had paired with the retail giant to create a line of inexpensive Missoni designer products.

As I perused the Missoni area on Target.com the "Bicycles and Luggage" section caught my eye.  I clicked on it and then I fell.  Hard.

There was the most striking bike I had ever seen.  (Yes, I know I have simple taste.)  But I just loved the black and w...

September 18: For Everything a Season

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Monday, September 19, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

How does it happen so fast?  How does it change from blistering summer heat and long sunny days to cool evenings and early nightfall?

This weekend marked a jerky swerve to fall.  All the sudden the sky looks like an early fall sky.  The cooler temps forced me to dig out the hoodie buried way in the back on my closest. And I was compelled to box up all my shorts and summer sundresses and store them in the basement.

Whahhhh!!!

But I was excited to see the pumpkins and corn stalks are for sale at m...

September 15: Living in a Fishbowl

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Saturday, September 17, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

Wanted to give you an update on the fish my son caught during the Goldfish Grab at Westlake pool last month.

Amazingly, only one fish has passed on to that big, clean fishbowl in the sky. So we still have eight fish left.

The little critters actually seem very happy to be crammed together in this one little thrift shop find.  Further proof that the best things in life are free. Or, almost free.  The fishbowl did cost me $2.

September 14: Walking in the Rain

September 13: Simmering Mad

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Wednesday, September 14, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

Yes, I missed an entire week of blogging.  Sorry!  I have truly been overwhelmed with work, writing, gardening and the kiddos heading back to school.  Mea culpa.

Anyhoo,  over the weekend, as I stared loathingly at the growing mound of nearly rotting tomatoes that had taken over my kitchen counter, I snapped.

I feverishly grabbed my chef's knife, giant soup pot, and largest cutting board and went bonkers.  I sliced and sliced and sliced until every single one of those darn tomatoes was reduce...

September 4: Gone Fishin'

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Monday, September 5, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

The bench behind my hubby says "Carpe Diem" which in Latin means "Seize the day." It doesn't mean "Seize the carp" as my son claims.

And it doesn't make sense anyway since this isn't a carp, it's a catfish.  A teeny, tiny catfish.  But as you can see from Hubby's big smile, the size matters not nearly as much as the pride and joy of catching something and reeling it in.

"Carpe catfish."

September 3: Dog Days of Summer

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Saturday, September 3, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

The Westlake pool literally went to the dogs today.

It was the outdoor pool's annual Dog Days of Summer event, where dogs and their people get to swim in the pool.

I don't know who was more excited, the dogs or their owners.  The dogs were grinning.  The people were grinning.  It was a stitch.

Only sad thing is this marks the end of the pool season.  At 4 o'clock today the pool officially closes till next year.

September 2: The Great Food Truck Race

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Saturday, September 3, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

Right now, food trucks are all the rage across the U.S. They're also really popular here in Cleveland.

This is the first food truck I ever came across.  Back in the fall, DimandDensum rattled their food truck up to Touch Supper Club one late Thursday night.  All the bar patrons went running out to greet it.  I had no idea why.

Until I tasted their thai wrap.  And then I, too, became an instant cult member of food trucks.

So today when I saw DimandDensum downtown on Public Square at lunch time, I...

September 1: Morning Constitutional

This is part of my morning constitutional.  "What is a constitutional?" you ask.  "Sounds like you're constipated."

No, I'm not.  And a constitutional has nothing to do with one's ability to, er, go.  A constitutional is a quiet, thoughtful walk outside.  A way of getting one's thoughts together for the day ahead.

So this is the way I walk from my parking garage to my office each morning.  And on late summer mornings like this, seeing this pretty little scene brings me joy. #happyincle

August 31: Getting Saucy

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Saturday, September 3, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

O.K. O.K. I'm sure you are sick and tired of hearing about my tomatoes.  But the darn things are all I can think about. They're everywhere I look in my kitchen and they're really stressing me out.

I don't want to waste them.  And I don't want them to get moldy.  But there's only so much marinara sauce, salsa and brochette I can take.  And now my neighbors don't even want them.

So, I'm spending another evening making sauce.  At least it looks pretty.  And makes the house smell really good.

August 30: 1 Tomato, 2 Tomato, 3 Tomato, 4

Honestly, I'm running out of places to put all my tomatoes. I have them on the window sill. I have them in big bowls on the counter. I have them on big platters on the kitchen table.

We're using them as fast as we can in as many ways as possible.  I made pasta sauce and bruchette. My hubby made salsa and loves to eat them raw. We use them on pizza and gave some to the neighbor.

I waited all summer for these beauties and now they're here but there are so many I feel overwhelmed. What a splend...

August 29: Prize in the Garden

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Tuesday, August 30, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

This is the prize in my garden.  I know it's small.  I know the leaves surrounding it look sickly.  But I am just so proud and excited about this darn pumpkin.

I've never grown a pumpkin before.  Never had the land.  Or a place where rabbits wouldn't get to it first.

August 28: Goldfish Grab

Tonight was the last night of the 2011 summer pool season in Westlake.  But instead of the kids meeting it with complaints and cries, they welcomed it with smiles and joy.

Why?  Because it was time for the annual goldfish grab.

At 7 p.m. the staff filled the kiddie pool with 100 goldfish, then let the children go.  The kids jumped in the water with nets and plastic pails, frantically trying to catch the little fish.  Any fish they caught, they got to take home.

A great way to unofficially mark...

August 27: When Life Gives You Tomatoes

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Saturday, August 27, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

This is what I love about gardening.  Not the weeding.  Not the watering.  Not the bug bites.  It's the homemade marinara sauce.

Every summer I can't wait to make this stuff.  And you just can't do it right until you have the perfect mix of tomatoes from the garden.  Red. Yellow. Purple.  Picked at the peek of ripeness.

Best pasta sauce in the world.  And well worth all the ...

August 25: First Day of School

August 24: Avengers Take Public Square

They rolled out the red carpet at Public Square today.  It wasn't for a movie premier, but it was for a movie shoot.

Crews from the movie Avengers have completed their transformation of Cleveland's Public Square into a bier garden in Stuttgart, Germany.

Filming takes place in the evenings well after I've left my office in Terminal Tower, so I haven't seen any real action here. But it's still exciting to see Public Square covered in German flags, red carpets and wrecked cars.

August 23: Tomatoes on the Sill

But it's got a great vibe, and the food's good, and the beers are decent. But mostly, it's about the patio on a chill night like tonight.  It just feels like city.  It just feels like summer. It just feels good.

August 21: Put the Pedal to the Metal

You have no school.  The days are soooo long.  And it's warm out.

And then finally, when you do go to bed, you're so exhausted you fall asleep hard.

August 18: Avengers Invade Public Square

Now that Higbee's is morphing into a casino, they're removing the old window panes, and boarding up the empty holes. Not sure what's going to appear on the other side once the plywood's removed.

August 9: The Secret Garden

I call this The Secret Garden.  I doubt most Clevelanders even know it exists even though it's right in the heart of downtown.

It's part of the Midland Building and sits of the Ontario side.  Thousands walk by every day, yet most don't notice the garden because it's obscured by a huge old black iron fence.  I was able to take this clear shot by wedging my iPhone between the bars.

As far as I can tell there is no way to get into this garden. The iron fence keeps folks on the street out, and I've...

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Wednesday, August 3, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

Just read in the Plain Dealer that last month was the second-hottest July in about 140 years in Cleveland.

The National Weather Service says it was also the fourth-hottest month overall since 1871.  The average temperature last month was 77.6 degrees.  Hot in Cleveland for sure.

August 2: Hot, Hazy & Lazy

August 1: Another One Bites The Dust

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Wednesday, August 3, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

When I came into work this morning, there was a building on this corner.  Tonight when I left work, that building was gone.

This is the corner of Prospect and Ontario. The building they tore down this week was on the south-west corner. I understand they tore it down to make way for an overhead walkway to the new casino being built in the old Higbee's Building.

All the dust from the demolition mixing with the hot humid August air made for a rather stifling walk to and from work today.

July 31: Slip Sliding Away

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Monday, August 1, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

It was 90 again today!  The sun refused to blink.

The only way to keep cool was to stay wet.  And a good old fashioned Slip 'n Slide is a great way to do that.

July 30: Avon Lake Arts Festival

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Sunday, July 31, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

You had to wear a hat today.  The July sun wasn't offering any mercy to folks in Northeast Ohio.

There were a ton of festivals going on around greater Cleveland, including the Avon Lakes Arts Fest.

Lake Erie not only offered a beautiful backdrop for the artisan's tents, it offered customers a cooling breeze.

July 29: Cleveland Critical Mass

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Sunday, July 31, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

Hot evening for a bike ride through downtown Cleveland. But that didn't stop hundreds of bicyclists from turning out for the monthly Cleveland Critical Mass.

Everyone gathered in Cleveland's Public Square for the start of the ride at 7pm. Then the massive group winded its way through downtown Cleveland, across the Detroit-Superior Bridge,  down West 25th all the way to Brooklyn.

We then circled back to West 25th Street and ended at Joy Machines Bike Shop. And that's where I snapped this photo...

July 28: Just Watching The Grass Grow

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Friday, July 29, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

Dad needs to mow the lawn. The grass is getting unruly.

But, to be honest, it's not his fault he hasn't done it yet. It's the weather's fault. Every day for the past week we've had a downpour. Then the sun comes out and it gets all hot and muggy.

Perfect conditions for growing weeds and crabgrass--which our lawn is blissfully filled with. Terrible conditions for someone to mow the lawn.

July 27: Two Wheels And Heels Ride

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Thursday, July 28, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

Perfect evening for a bike ride. More than 50 ladies turned out for the first ever Two Wheels and Heels bicycle ride last night in Cleveland.

We started at the Market Avenue Wine Bar in Ohio City and peddled through a few Cleveland neighborhoods before making our next stop at Lava Lounge in Tremont.

From there we circled back to West 25th Street in Ohio City. And that's where Frank Lanza snapped this photo. Another beautiful night in Cleveland.

July 26: The Boy Of Summer

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Wednesday, July 27, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

It's the boy's birthday.  It was filled with swimming in a yucky pond, shooting b.b. guns with his bud, and wetting a line.

And this is how he ended his day.  Caught a mighty fine small mouth bass.  For a ten year old boy, it doesn't get any better than this.

July 25: Summer In The City

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Wednesday, July 27, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

Hot times, summer in the city. You're looking north up East 4th Street.  This is the hustling, bustling heart of the downtown lunch scene.

I took this around 9:30am, so not a whole lot of Clevelanders are out and about just yet. But by noon, this little stretch of street is packed with workers who just can't wait to flood out of their chilly air conditioned offices and spill out onto East Fourth for a lunch hour in the hot summer sun.

July 23: Making A Splash

It's the modern day equivalent of jumping in the fireplug. The splash ground.

Little kids are drawn to it like flies to a bug zapper. They squeal.  The shriek.  They run away giggling.
It's a great way to keep the kids cool when the temps are in the 90s for the fifth day in a row.  And it's just so darn fun to watch.

July 22: Sun Dress Weather

July 21: Thunderboomers and Showers

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Saturday, July 23, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

It's all in your perspective. As an adult, I hate the rain. Makes my hair frizzy. Gets my clothes wet. Just makes my irritable.

But to my 3 year old, the rain is a treat. The heavier the better. As soon as it starts to pour, she runs to the closet to pull on her rubber kitty boots, matching pink rain slicker, and Dora the Explorer umbrella.

She begs me to open the back door.  The second I do, she springs out, giggling with joy.  And for a moment or two, it makes me think the rain is a treat ...

July 19: Plain Old Hot

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Thursday, July 21, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

This is the Plain Dealer building on Superior Avenue in Cleveland.  This is where the reporters, editors and photographers gather each day to create Cleveland's only daily newspaper.

It was plain old hot at the Plain Dealer today.  It was hot everywhere in North East Ohio.  87 degrees hot.

Reason I snapped this shot?  I'm an official freelance reporter here as of today.  And I'd like to think this little blog had something to do with that.

July 19: Flash Flood Warning

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Tuesday, July 19, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

Woke last night to the sound of thunder.  Then came the rain.

By the time I dashed out to my car for work at 3:30am, the rain was coming down in sheets.  And it didn't stop for at least two hours.

The National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Warning for Cuyahoga County, saying up to four inches of rain may fall.  The heavy precip flooded low lying areas.

I snapped this photo of the Rocky River around 10am.  It was swollen, muddy and rushing. Luckily, most of the boats tied to the docks at...

July 18: Where It All Began

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Tuesday, July 19, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

Just wanted to take you back to where my lovely lettuce first put down roots.  The Rocky River Community Garden.

This year the garden opened on Saturday, June 6.  By the time I tilled my plot and covered it with weed block fabric, I didn't get my seedlings into the ground until June 12. But now, a mere six weeks later, the garden's really starting to take root.

And wait till you see what it looks like a month from now!

July 16: Now That's Big

Went on a group bike ride through the Cleveland neighborhood of Collinwood this evening. It was sunny, about 85 degrees, with a gentle breeze.

We visited a bunch of local landmarks including the lake front, a tiny farm with goats and chickens, and Arts Collinwood.

But the highlighted of the ride was the new gigantic wind turbine at Lincoln Electric.  Someone in the crowd said it's more than 280 feet tall.  I really have no idea, but when you look up at it you feel woozy.

July 14: End Of Season

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Friday, July 15, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

It's the end of the season. Not summer, of course.  I'm talking ball. My son's little league season ended last week, and tonight my daughter's softball season ended with a real nail bitter.

The evening air actually had a bit of a chill to it. It was breezy and as the sun sunk lower in the sky the mercury in the thermometer went along with it.

Made me think Fall isn't all that far off.

July 12: Playing With Fire

If you play with fire, you'll get burned.  Isn't that the saying?  Well, I'd like to add a small footnote to that.

*Except if the fire is at the end of a sparkler.

What is it about kids and sparklers? Maybe it's the glow. Maybe it's the sound. Or maybe they just love the idea of being able to hold onto sparking fire.

Whatever the reason, another summer rite of passage has to be using up the last of the Fourth of July sparklers.  And feeling that twinge of sadness when you reach into the box an...

The weather was clear and sunny, but dang it was hot and muggy.  Good thing is, I think I lost five pounds by the time we reached the end of the street.  Bad thing? I gained it all back when I chugged a Gatorade at my son's...

July 8: On A Bender

Take a close look at this photo.  What do you see?

You're looking at a sharp bend in the Cuyahoga River, and a giant freighter trying to maneuver through. For scale, look at the cement mixing truck.  That gives you an idea of just how huge the freighter is.

Cuyahoga is an Native American word. It's Iroquois for "crooked river." And the name's just as appropriate today as it was back then.

July 6: Yeah, This Is Cleveland

I've been wanting to get down to the lakeshore for another photo for a while.  It's less than a half-mile from my house, but I don't get there enough.

Cleveland's lakeshore is gorgeous.  In the winter, in the spring, in the fall, and in the summer--Lake Erie is a gift.  And when you pair that with sunny temps in the 80s, and skies that rival the blues of the lake, well, you can start to understand why I moved here. And stayed.

Yeah, this is Cleveland.

The drive in was easy.  Even found a parking space on the fifth floor instead of the top level.  And the walk to and from the garage was mighty fine.  Especially because the sky was a brilliant blue which look pretty darn dashing snuggling up against the Terminal Tower.

June 28: Good Evening For A Toast

The key to optimum marshmallow toasting is finding the perfect stick.  It has to be just long enough with a point at the end.  And it has to be a bit green so it doesn't burn.

Next you have to make sure you wiggle that marshmallow on just right, so it doesn't fall off into the fire.  And lastly, you have to know how you like your marshmallow toasted.

Before I moved to northeast Ohio I'd never heard of a midge.  I'm still not sure if they're the same thing as a May Fly. But I do know now they're different than a Canadian Soldier.  I think.

Anyway, a midge is a teeny tiny bug that looks a whole lot like a mosquito only it doesn't bite.  They're kind of like harmless backyard bunnies.  The sole reason they exist it to breed, live a scant 24 hours, and act as food for the rest of the food chain. The downer to midges, though, is they come like...

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Monday, June 6, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

Flowers, flowers, everywhere.  Our backyard is awash in color. Purple on the rhododendron.  White on the blackberry bushes.  And rich reds on the heirloom rosebush. My daughter loves running 'round the yard picking all the flowers.  And I love the fresh bouquets filling up the jelly jars on my kitchen window sill.

June 4: Lake Erie

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Saturday, June 4, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

A lot of folks have no idea Cleveland is on a lake. And that lake is so large it looks like an ocean from the shore.  We're lucky to have a beach front park in our town, and on scorching days like today, it feels wonderful to bury your toes in the cool sand and let the lake breezes have their way with your hair.

June 3: I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Saturday, June 4, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

One of the true joys of late spring in Northeast Ohio is being able to stand outside on the back porch and gobble down a big old ice cream cone.  Doesn't matter if it drips.  Heck that's part of the fun.  Trying to lick up those pesky trickles of gooey melted goodness before they drop from the end of the cone is a game.

And if you lose, and the drip does manage to fall on the porch, so what?  Mom doesn't care. Everyone knows the ants will clean it up by tomorrow.

June 2: Calm, Cool & Collected

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Friday, June 3, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

This is my bike.  I love my bike.  You won't find another one like it 'cause my gloriously gifted hubby built it just for me. He found a racing bike frame, and then adapted it with cruiser handle bars and seat. That means it's fast and light, yet addictingly comfortable.

I then girlied it up with a vintage Parisian basket, chrome rearview mirror, and genuine Chinese Bee Bell. So on a calm and cool day like today I can peddle about town looking tres collected!

June 1: Sapphire Blue Skies

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Wednesday, June 1, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

When it was completed in 1930, Terminal Tower was the second tallest building in the world. This landmark skyscraper sits at the heart of Public Square in downtown Cleveland. Its 52 stories reach way up into the heavens, and today it seemed to point right up as if to say,"Look at these sapphire blue skies.  They're gorgeous!"

May 31: Where's my Tide?

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Wednesday, June 1, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

Boys.  What is it that drives them to see a mud puddle and feel compelled to jump in?  No, not just jump in--wallow in. The troughs of thick mud that have formed in the tire ruts behind our house are smelly and disgusting and brimming with mosquito larvae. In other words, boy heaven.  And mom hell.  Where's my Tide?

May 30: Memorial Day

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Monday, May 30, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

Hot as heck!  The mercury stretched all the way up to 88 today and the humidity was rain forestesque. Exactly the kind of weather you want for Memorial Day.  And a perfect day to hit the pool no matter what its size.

May 28: Honey, Can You Mow the Lawn?

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Saturday, May 28, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

Another consequence of all this spring rain is the lawn is growing like gang busters, but you can't mow it 'cause it's always sopping wet.  Today, we caught a break.  The skies were mostly gray, but the rain held off.  So my hubby was able to get a quick mow in. Our yard looks so sweet!

May 27: My Legs Hurt

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Saturday, May 28, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

The last Friday of each month is Critical Mass in Cleveland.  Critical Mass is a group bike ride through downtown Cleveland.  It's like a flash mob. You never know how many people are going to show and it's mainly promoted through social media. Tonight was cool but dry.  Turns out more than 250 bikers showed up, and we made the news on WKYC. Not bad.  Though my legs are sore.

May 26:

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Friday, May 27, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

Another evening shrouded in stormy skies.  The winds and thunder weren't as bad as last night, but the rain was faster and heavier.  Had to drive through a flooded intersection to get home tonight.  Hope my car starts in the morning.

May 25: Green Skies at Night

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Thursday, May 26, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

When you see a green sky, ya' better hide.  That's what I've learned from my years as a reporter in Ohio. This is what the world looks like just before a tornado rolls into your neck of the woods.  An eerie shade of almost pond algae green.  And sure enough, for the second night in a row, tornadoes touched down in Northeast Ohio.  Luckily, once again my town was spared.  But to the east of us, some folks weren't as lucky.

May 24: How Can My Garden Grow?

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Wednesday, May 25, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

Most gardeners in Northeast Ohio go by the old adage, "Wait till Mother's Day to start planting outdoors."  But this year, Mother's Day has come and long gone, and still my vegetable seedlings just sit n their little plastic pots.  I know they long to stretch out their tangled and balled white roots.  "But it's just too soggy out there," I try to explain. "You'll drown." I don't think they're very happy about this spring either.

May 23: What the Heck?

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Tuesday, May 24, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

What the heck is going on here?  The day started off warm and relatively sunny.  My son ran out into the backyard, grabbed some flowers, and stuck them promptly up his nose.

But by supper time, the storm clouds rolled in and next thing you know an Emergency Tornado Warning was screaming at us from the TV. Luckily, our neighborhood was sparred, but I heard other parts of Cuyahoga County suffered some damage.  Nothing too severe. Except for my son's current sneezing fit. I warned him not to stic...

May 21: First Sunburn of 2011

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Sunday, May 22, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

Had to break out the 50 SPF sunscreen today. The sun was full-on from the moment it peeked out from the morning horizon until its last lingering rays painted a stunning sunset over Lake Erie.   We spent most of the day outside, taking part in a three hour group bike ride through the Old Brooklyn section of Cleveland.  And despite a ball cap and layers of sunscreen I still managed to catch a sunburn.  Actually feels good in a way.  Feels like summer.

May 13: Our Community Garden

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Friday, May 13, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

This is our city's community garden.  As you can see, it's barren right now.  It looks gray, and depressing and dead.  All the recent rain has also left a ring of mud around the garden where the path used to be.  Can't wait to show you what this seeming wasteland looks like a month from now.

Fantabulous.  Outrageous.  Splendiferous.  Whatever word you fancy, today was that day.  Sunny. About 78. And not a cloud in the sky or the breeze to push it around if there was. Made me actually want to go to the garden center and buy some flowers.  Glorious.

May 10: Perfect Day for a Ride

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Tuesday, May 10, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

When you're a kid, there's nothing like riding a bike.  One of my favorite things about the community where I live is kids regularly ride their bikes to school, even in bad weather.  And on a stunning day like today, so many kids ride they fill up ever single slot in the school bike racks, and late-comers are forced to chain their bikes to the fence surrounding the ball field. Days like today make me wish I was a kid again.

May 9: Brilliant Sunshine & Cool Temps

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Monday, May 9, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

It's another brilliant sunshiny day. The temps are definitely still on the chilly side, and you have to wear a jacket, but I didn't see a rain drop or storm cloud all day.  The only thing sunnier that this fine May day is my 3 year old daughter's current disposition.

May 8: Mother of All Days

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Sunday, May 8, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

Yup, it's Mother's Day.  The day every Mother has a love/hate relationship with.  If you're a Mom, and your Mother's alive, that means packing up your kids, and all their fancy outfits, and stuffing every complaining thing in the car. It means making your husband pull on those "embarrassing" khaki pants and a brand new stiff polo to sit through a three hour brunch with your Mother.  It means forcing the entire family to pose for miserable photos that you hope will turn into heirlooms, but in ...

May 7: Little League Opening Day

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Sunday, May 8, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

Little League Opening Day is a really big deal.  Practically the whole town turns out to see our young sprouts don their bright, clean, new uniforms and applaud for the local dads and business owners who either coach or sponsor the teams. Each player poses for photos.  And then they take to the field for a single inning of play.  Last year it was 32 degrees, windy and blowing sleet.  This year was 65 degrees and sunny.  Picture perfect.

May 6: Friday!

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Saturday, May 7, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

There are so many things I could write about for today.  It was sunny. It rained. It was sunny again. It rained again. And then it was dry and dark.  I took a ton of photos today, but the one I'm using here is my favorite. It's my old school bar. The Garage on W. 25th in Cleveland.  God bless Ursula and Jeff.  You'll never know how much you figure into my life.

May 3: Wet & Dreary Downtown Cleveland

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Tuesday, May 3, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

I work in downtown Cleveland. The weather always seems exponentially worse when you walk down the city streets.  The wind whips harder.  The rain comes at a slant. And its colder because of the lake.  No matter how much I bundle-up, I always arrive at work looking like a drowned, frazzled, red nosed rat.

May 1: May Day

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Sunday, May 1, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

On this first day of May, I thought it'd be fun to trek into the woods and see how the May Apples are doing. These rich green umbrella shaped plants grow in clusters in the shade of mature forests.  Later in May, a golfball sized white flower will form under the umbrella  leaves. Seeing these reminds me of when I was a kid and spent hours exploring the deep woods behind our house.  There's just something so simply exquisite and peaceful about the May Apple, a perfect metaphor for how it feel...

April 29: Love is in the Air

April 26: Day After the Storm

Posted by Katherine Boyd on Tuesday, April 26, 2011, In : Cleveland Weather

I have a new pond in the backyard!  We got more than 3 inches of rain yesterday.  The ground was already saturated from all the rain we've had over the past couple of weeks, so the new rain just decided to congregate in tiny ponds anywhere it could.  This is the field behind my house.  It's usually just draped in grass and dandelions.  But the new pond is a lovely addition.
